At the height of Covid, we were all suddenly thrust into an online existence. Schools and businesses in every industry were forced to make dramatic adjustments in how they appeared and functioned in the world. Although online learning has been around for years, the pandemic opened our eyes to the power of digital presence, and it quickly led to a new way of life for many.

When schools shut down, students of all ages were required to learn in a virtual format. For some, this was a difficult transition, while for others, it was an exciting adventure. Since 2020, we have learned a great deal about how to function in a post-pandemic world, including online education.  Many students have decided to continue their coursework virtually in order to maintain flexibility and freedom in their lives.

A Shift Toward Online Learning

While the sudden shift to online learning may have initially been an adjustment for many, a large number of older students and generations seemed to embrace the new format. People also realized they could access more information and accomplish more than they previously realized. Armed with this new knowledge, a new wave of interest was formed in exploring virtual work and school opportunities.

The Great Resignation, as it is now known, saw an unprecedented number of people leave their current jobs to pursue their passions in more flexible and catering industries as well as by starting their own businesses. An overwhelming number of those who made this shift reported that an online course helped them to make their decision. Many people even found that a valuable online master’s degree helped them to advance in their current job industry.

Now that we are in a post-pandemic world, many of us seem to be functioning in a combination of ways. In-person, hybrid and virtual formats are now the norm for many students and employees, which has accommodated varying needs and lifestyles. One of the biggest takeaways that people have had during this time is that the Pandemic did not slow down or threaten their ability to grow, but rather that it accelerated the long-term expansion and desirability of learning online.

Blended Learning Model

The terms asynchronous and synchronous have become quite familiar to many of those who made the switch to online learning platforms. While each of these types of learning helps to meet the differing needs of students, it is important to look closely at how timing and presence impact learning. For example, while synchronous learning mimics real-time learning environments through live instruction, it may create challenges for students who need immediate clarification or have questions but are unable or unwilling to disrupt the live teaching format. Likewise, while an asynchronous platform allows students to learn at their own pace, they must be able to work independently. Both models offer great benefits; however, a blended model of collaborative asynchronous and synchronous learning would provide students with a greater chance for success.

Successful Online Learning

In order to have a meaningful and successful learning experience, it is important that you approach online education with intention. You can begin by creating a schedule and thinking of ways to manage your time wisely. Just as you would in person, it’s important to be organized and thorough. You should also arrange a designated space, free of distractions, where you can focus on your studies. Since you will be learning online, it will be important to think of creative ways to get engaged with your work. For example, you may want to make a habit of asking questions, recapping concepts, taking notes, and/or sharing your learning with others. Lastly, because you are online, you’ll want to know where to turn for help when you need it. By keeping a handy list of contact information for resources and support, you will be able to achieve success. Learning may have a different look and feel than it did before, but if we approach it carefully, we can achieve whatever we truly desire, all in the form of online learning.
