OSRS

Did you know that the PJ timer can influence how you can earn OSRS gold in PvP?

PJ stands for “player jumping,” and it is something that could have happened before the timer was introduced. It can still happen now, but it is way less likely and requires more effort on the jumper’s part. Simply put, another player can “jump” your kill and get your loot and the potential OSRS GP you could get from that specific kill by finishing off your victim. This happens especially in the deep wilderness, where the combat level gap between players can be higher, and the jumping PKer has higher stats or stronger gear. The PJ timer is a mechanic introduced to prevent this from happening on a large scale so that you get the OSRS gold that’s yours for that kill.

How Does the PJ Timer Work?

Other players can no longer just hop in and steal your prey except for a few exceptions. If you liked the old way the wilderness worked, you could still experience it in worlds 318 and 319. The PJ timer also doesn’t affect the permanent Deadman mode world—the highly competitive OSRS PvP server governed by very different PvP rules than the main game. Besides these exceptions, if you step into the wilderness, you’ll have this new mechanic.

The PJ timer will prevent you from getting attacked by other players or NPCs for 20 ticks after you attack your target. This comes with positives and negatives. On the bright side, you’ll be able to obtain your OSRS GP from your victims without fearing interference from other PKers. On the other hand, you’ll have a more challenging time stealing kills from other players to obtain OSRS gold, and some might find that particular kill stealing or player jumping activity pretty entertaining.

The Brief History of the PJ Timer

When the PJ timer was first introduced, Jagex increased the log-out time to 12 seconds, while the PJ timer was 20 ticks (approximately 12 seconds). However, players highly contended with this decision as it gave a massive advantage to specific PvP clans while creating a disadvantage for players interested in the PvM aspect of the wilderness. Therefore, the log-out timer has been reverted to the regular 10 seconds in the first few hours from the update, while the PJ timer stayed at 12, making a few escapes possible.

Should Jagex Revert the PJ Timer

There’s a controversy today as to whether Jagex should revert the PJ timer or not. The community is pretty split about this topic. While some players want with passion for the PJ timer to be removed and blame the “dying state of OSRS’ PvP” on the PJ timer, other players are pleased with the change. And then, of course, there’s always the category of players that couldn’t care less about this specific issue.

It does depend a lot on what activities you find the most entertaining in the wilderness. If you’re a solo PKer, you will love the PJ timer and consider it a blessing that will make your solo PKing life much easier and entertaining. If you love PKing with friends, however, you and your friends might hate this update as it does take a lot off the table, and you’ll only be able to engage with your friends in multi areas or have a more difficult time pulling it together in single zones, such as the Revenant caves.

As a result, your gameplay will become more restricted as you won’t be able to save your friend from other PKers, for example. You might also find it much harder to find victims because previously, you could rely on your whole group to jump worlds and find unfortunate victims, but right now, you’ll have more of a hopping game by yourself, with fewer victims per hour than before.

There are still places with a shorter PJ timer, such as the Revenant Caves in the wilderness. A common strategy for group PKing here is that once someone from the group finds the victim, they freeze them, spec them, and then hide out of range. After the 10 seconds PJ timer, their friend joins in and teleblocks the victim. Other friends from the group might also join in and spec the victim whenever the PJ timer is up.

Single and Multi-combat Areas

You might also find it interesting that currently, there are multi-way combat areas where attacking and being attacked by multiple enemies is possible. There are also single-combat areas where you can only attack and be attacked by one enemy at a time. They are all around Gielinor, not just in the wilderness.

You won’t be able to burst your Nechryael task in the Slayer tower as that’s a single zone, but you’ll be able to burst them in the Catacombs of Kourend, which is a multi-combat zone. Even though the implications differ, the mechanics are the same. So if you’re adventuring in the wilderness, you’ll need to learn which areas are single combat and have the PJ timer and which are multi. Knowing the multi and single areas can help prevent you from getting killed and wasting OSRS GP. It can also help you obtain OSRS gold by knowing your activity’s potential risk vs. reward.
